Multiple complaints were made to the Columbia Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol regarding clothing and a large amount of blood near the 130 mile marker of westbound Interstate 70 on Saturday morning.

Upon investigation, CPD determined a pedestrian could have been struck by a car on the outside shoulder while riding a bicycle.

The pedestrian was wearing a dark brown colored sweatshirt, black shirt, blue jeans and boots. Also recovered at the scene were a black backpack and wallet. It contained personal identification documents, according to a CPD news release.

“The release of the victim’s identity is being withheld pending DNA examination by the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office,” the release reports.

The information gathered at the scene suggests the victim was a 36-year-old black male from Columbia.

The department hopes to receive the DNA results within the week, CPD spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said.

At press time, Stroer had no further updates on the investigation.

The calls reporting the incident came in at 12:08 and 12:44 a.m., one of which was forwarded from Troop F of the MSHP. The news release also referenced a blanket and shoe.

A few hours later, Troop F received an additional complaint related to a dead deer in the roadway, just prior to the 128 mile marker.

“The male complainant advised he had hit something but was unsure what it was,” according to the news release.

He reportedly pulled over on the 128A exit ramp and waited until CPD arrived at approximately 4:24 a.m. The news release does not include any details regarding the driver’s condition or the state of his vehicle.

At this time it is unclear if the two incidents are related, but the facts surrounding the sequence of events and time frame are under examination.
