**Javier Fernandez**
_Relationship builder and friend of freshmen_
Javier Fernandez is a recently-minted coffee addict.
But his newfound love for caffeine is understandable –– not only is he double majoring in strategic communication and Spanish, but he’s also the 2014 Summer Welcome Student Coordinator. As such, Fernandez plays a key role in the planning of next year’s freshman orientation.
Fernandez, a junior this year, was a Summer Welcome leader this past summer. He says that he enjoyed the relationships he was able to build through the program, both those with students and with his fellow leaders, and that this experience gave him a “passion for involvement.”
Fernandez’s love for building relationships has also led him to be a Community Adviser the past two years.
“College can be scary,” he says.
Recalling those first few days of his own freshman year, Fernandez says that having a CA who helped him become more comfortable in his new home gave him a heart for helping freshmen make a smooth transition into college.
The Miami native credits his numerous involvements at MU with helping him in his academic life. Because of all he does, he’s become a master at prioritizing and focusing on one task at a time.
With a smile on his face and a pumpkin spice latte in hand, Fernandez will continue to plan for this year’s Winter Welcome.
“(I strive to) create positive memories with individuals,” Fernandez says.
**Daewun Sin**
_Running a family business and dreaming of the future_
701 E. Locust St. is home to Chong’s Oriental Market. Running the business is Daewun Sin, a 2007 biological sciences University of Missouri graduate.
Chong’s Oriental Market, established by Sin’s parents, has been in business for over 23 years. Sin has now taken over.
“I like that I’m my own boss,” he says.
Sin hopes to continue his independence, but in a different setting.
“I think I’ll only be here another year or so,” he says. “I want to move to a bigger city and go back to school.”
Nothing is completely set in stone just yet, but Sin believes you have to prepare for bigger things for when the time is right.
Sin’s upcoming marriage, on the other hand, _is_ set in stone. He will marry his fiancée of a year and a half next fall. She currently resides in Kansas City. They hope to live in Chicago one day.
Sin has been to plenty of places: South Korea, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica and Grand Cayman. He wants to experience the local customs and foods wherever he goes. Grand Cayman, for instance, is “too commercialized.”
“I was a little bummed out about it,” he says.
He hopes to take a tour of Asia, visiting not only the popular regions but also the less visited regions of Asia.
