As a Los Angeles native, one of my fears of moving to mid-Missouri was not being able to find amazing Mexican food, which has been a staple of my diet all my life. I needn’t have worried — Rio Grande has all the authentic flavors of my childhood for a price that makes my college budget sing.
I love their chicken nachos, and a half-plate appetizer is enough to fill up one person for $4.99. The cheese they use will surprise you with its creamy texture, but it’s still delicious.
If you’re looking for a larger dish, try their Rio Grande combos. My favorite combo is the #6. For $8.95 you get a tamale and chile relleno with a side of rice and beans. This dish has the same bold and spicy flavors I remember from California.
One of my favorite parts about the restaurant is the fun and relaxed atmosphere, which feels as authentic to me as the food. It’s a great place to have lunch with friends or to take a date for a bite before seeing a movie. So, if you’re looking to experience the real deal from Mexico, look no further than Rio Grande right here in Columbia.
