Ah, the Grammys. Some love them, some hate them, some just tune in to see whatever fantastic grouping of artists is performing together (see Mumford & Sons, the Avett Brothers and Bob Dylan in 2011).
With the biggest award ceremony in music rapidly approaching, MOVE asked a few students how they feel about the festivities, and who they think will take home awards such as Best New Artist and Album of the Year.
Here’s a look at some MU musical opinions and Grammy-winning choices:
**Tess Campbell, freshman**
Campbell is your average music lover, with an eclectic taste for indie-almost-anything. Her favorite bands range from Cage the Elephant to The Black Keys. She considers seeing The Killers at Lollapalooza to be her favorite music memory.
“(Music) is a way to relax and escape from everything,” Campbell says.
She, like many others, isn’t as much of a Grammy enthusiast, however.
“They don’t pay much attention to my preferred genre of music,” she says.
Here are Campbell’s Grammy picks:
_Record of the Year: “Royals”_
_Album of the Year:_ Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City
_Best New Artist: Kendrick Lamar_
_Song of the Year: “Royals”_
_Best Rap Album:_ Magna Carta … Holy Grail
_Best Alternative Music Album:_ Trouble Will Find Me
**Coleman Hodges, senior**
Hodges is a former Mojo’s employee and considers music to play a monumental role in his life.
“(Music) narrates everything I do,” he says. “I can find music to better any situation or fit the mood for any way I’m feeling.”
A lover of house/trance music, Coleman was exposed to a great variety of smaller acts through working at Mojo’s.
Here are Coleman’s choices:
Record of the Year: “Get Lucky”
Album of the Year: _The Heist_
Best New Artist: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Song of the Year: “Locked Out of Heaven”
Best Rap Album: _Yeezus_
Best Alternative Music Album: _Lonerism_
**Maya Garnaat, junior**
A veteran member of MU’s a cappella group the Naturelles, Garnaat demonstrates her passion for music by performing with her group.
“Being in the Naturelles makes singing very fun and gratifying,” she says.
Loyal to her passion for music, Garnaat watches the Grammys every year.
