
UM System Board of Curators voted to hire an independent attorney to investigate MU’s handling of the [Sasha Menu Courey case](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2014/1/26/report-alleges-mizzou-athletics-failed-investigate/).
The vote happened Wednesday night at the board’s meeting at MU. Earlier that day, UM System President Tim Wolfe had [talked to press](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2014/1/29/um-president-recommends-hiring-independent-attorne/) about recommending the hire.
“Ms. Courey’s story is very tragic and sad, and our sympathy and prayers are with her family, friends and teammates,” said Don Downing, University of Missouri Board of Curators chairman in a statement released by the system Wednesday night. “The board wants to take an independent look at what happened here.”
The board will now begin the process of selecting and hiring a firm to independently investigate the university. A deadline of April 11, the board’s next meeting, has been set for the attorney to report back with conclusions.
The April 11 meeting will be held at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
