The Wellness Resource Center has hosted its Safe Spring Break fair for more than 20 years, promoting safety as students travel during break. Acknowledging that most students go home — rather than to faraway destinations — during their time off, the WRC assures its tips are beneficial to all students.
Center director Kim Dude helped MOVE create a list of tips and tricks for a safe spring break:
1. Drowsy driving is almost as dangerous as drunk driving. If you’ve had a long day, take a nap before traveling.
2. Rushing to get to your destination can lead to some serious frustration and eventually accidents. So slow down. Dude says at least 1,500 people per year are killed or seriously injured in crashes resulting from aggressive driving.
3. Designate a (100 percent) sober driver for the night to keep you and your friends safe on and off the road.
4. Dude says 80-90 percent of sexual assaults occur when either the victim or offender are under the influence. Stick with your friends, and hold each other accountable for actions.
5. Wear sunscreen and drink lots of water to protect your skin from the sun, and stay hydrated in the heat.
