Flipping through the latest fashion magazines and perusing the newest posts on some of my favorite style blogs, I’ve come to notice a trend that seems to sneak its way into the hottest subjects of almost all of them: athletic wear.
The high-fashion ladies gracing these glossy pages and modern sites are trading their sculpted blazers for sporty jackets, pencil skirts for fitted cropped pants and, yes, even their stilettos for sneakers.
Alas, after many a prayer from both the fashion-crazed and sporty gals alike, the fashion heavens have bestowed upon us looks that seemingly achieve the impossible: being both comfortable _and_ chic.
Sound the alarms! Toss on your neon windbreaker. Maybe even pick up some dumbbells or go for your monthly jog because the sporty look is officially in and announcing itself with the force of an obnoxious P.E. teacher’s bullhorn.
And frankly, this new athletic look is bringing in trends and vibes that are rad as all get out.
My inner fourth grade self and present being are simultaneously rejoicing. But the ones that’ll be even happier about this latest fashion “do”? Your feet.
No longer will you have to suffer through nights of blisters and cramps, of shoes that are too tight in the toes and the arch and pretty much everywhere (but, hey, they were on sale,) or even of those agonizing walks back from a night out. Sneakers have finally been deemed sartorially acceptable and, dang, is it the best fashion news we’ve gotten in a while.
Although many a fashion folk have been seen sporting actual running shoes from the likes of Nike and Adidas with polished outfits, it’s easy for this look to come off as mismatched and hasty rather than stylish and cute, if not executed properly.
For a more foolproof version of the trend, stick with a classic sneaker like a high-top Converse. I sport my white ones with almost every type of outfit and could go on for days about their simple, perfect versatility. To go for the sporty look (that’s also spring-approved), toss them on with a pair of vibrantly colored flat-front shorts and a tucked-in denim shirt.
What’s fabulous about this type of outfit is how ideal it is for personalized, creative accessorizing. To continue with the “I obviously play field hockey in my free time” vibe, I’d pair it with a baseball cap and a sporty watch. If you still want to keep some girly flair, toss on a collection of long-stranded necklaces and a collection of rings instead. The contrast between the sneakers and the jewelry creates a look that translates easily from day to night.
Another sporty look sprinting into the spring fashion scene is the cropped track pant. These pants hit just above the ankle and tend to have either a fun pattern or a pinch of a sheeny undertone. They also hit a little higher on the waist, making them super flattering. I’d pair them with a solid-colored crop top and sandals that have a slight heel to them. The pants do a phenomenal job of elongating the legs, and adding that final hint of a heel will emphasize this even more.
The key to keeping this new sporty look from looking too casual is in adding incredibly simple accessories. These can range from a few stackable rings to a pair of pearl earrings, from a simple gold chain necklace to a dainty bracelet. By adding barely-there accessories, you still keep that sporty air while preventing the look from becoming too harsh.
One of the greatest aspects of fashion is hopping into clothes that in some way transform you. As soon as I tried this sporty trend, I suddenly felt the urge to go rock climbing and run a half marathon (because baby steps, people).
So whether you’re a total trendster or a sporty dame, grab this comfortably chic look by the sweatbands and work it out.
