Set over the course of arguably the single most important day in the NFL, “Draft Day” follows the story of Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver (Kevin Costner) and his vigorous attempts at building a winning team.
Throughout the day, Weaver is presented with a plethora of trading offers from varying NFL managers, including an immensely tempting offer to take the No. 1 pick quarterback in exchange for future Cleveland draft picks.
Weaver eventually must decide if he wants to build a team based on character or based on winning records, the process of which provokes a surprising amount of suspense and intrigue for the audience.
Although the film is undoubtedly sport-centric, there’s still background noise of a romantic storyline with Weaver’s love-interest and baby-mama-to-be, Ali (Jennifer Garner), who yearns to make her and Weaver’s currently secret relationship public knowledge, along with solid performances from the likes of Denis Leary as Coach Penn and Frank Langella as the Cleveland Browns owner.
“Draft Day,” albeit rather predictable, does a stellar job of keeping the audience on edge and creating new conundrums all the way up until the very end of the film. It’s an inarguably feel-good flick that’ll make both sports enthusiasts and average Joe moviegoers alike leave satisfied with an inevitable itch for some good old-fashioned American football.
