Over the last month, the cast and crew of “ADDicted” have been working among the crowd of MU students darting from class to class.
“ADDicted,” is a movie about college football player Drew Dawson (Luke Guldan) who is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and faces struggles with things like grades, relationships and medication.
The movie has been being filmed around campus for the past month. Along with classrooms and lecture halls, Columbia hotspots like Shakespeare’s, Broadway Diner and Harpo’s have been used as filming locations for “ADDicted.” Scenes were also shot throughout Greek Town and at Faurot Field.
“Even though the character has been emotionally intense and the days have been long, the environment, I feel, has helped,” Guldan says. “Everyone in the town (has been) so amazing. Just being in such a cool, nurturing environment has really made it easier.”
The cast and crew have been working diligently, sometimes until the late hours of the night. Most feature films average at shooting two pages of the script a day, but some days, “ADDicted” will shoot up to 10 or 12 pages in a matter of hours.
Guldan says playing the lead role of a young adult struggling with ADD has been “very intense, emotionally.”
Throughout the film, Drew is under pressure from his family, friends and society. “ADDicted” addresses a variety of themes and issues, such as being uncertain of the future, the fear of failure and the emphasis that is placed on being the best — mediocre is not just mediocre, it’s unacceptable.
“This is a coming of age-type story with a great script,” Guldan says. “I think with that, it’s challenging because you want to do it justice. You want to make it great or relatable the best you can.”
Guldan has been shooting almost every day since his arrival in Columbia on March 26.
“It’s been draining, but good,” Guldan says. ”It’s like after you have a long day of work or you’ve been working really hard — you’re drained but you feel good. You feel good.”
When it comes to this project, Guldan beams with pride over getting the opportunity to be involved.
“It’s different than any other project I’ve ever done,” Guldan says. “To be trusted, to be given the opportunity to bring some breath into this thing, to give it some life… I’ve been cast in other things up until this point that haven’t allowed me to try this, so that’s why I’m proud. I don’t know how the film will turn out or what will come of it, but just so far the process (has been great).”
The film is tentatively set for a fall release date. Guldan says he wants those who see “ADDicted” to come away from the film with a simple message — to live.
“If you have something in you and you feel it, it’s hard and it could take a lifetime, but you don’t have to be scared of it or embarrassed of it,” Guldan says. “Go for it, because you only get one chance, one life, to do it.”
