It’s that dash to the journalism school from the opposite side of campus after waking up a solid 45 minutes late, panic shooting through every ounce of your being as you hastily try to tie your shoes and shove a granola bar in your mouth at the same time (note: not to brag or anything, but this has become one of my finest-tuned talents).
It’s sitting in the Nashville airport during a three-hour layover with no Internet connection and $3 to your name (the simple joys of being a college student) and noticing the different paces of people. Some women nearly sprinting as their heels frantically clack, struggling to make it on time for that connecting flight; some others moving at a softer pace, popping into Starbucks for caffeinated inspiration to make it through that dreaded travel day.
It’s having to get places, and get there quick. We as human beings, especially as college students, are continuously on the go. We’re constantly moving from one place to the next, and more often than not, we’re doing so in a hurried rush.
Yet as tempted as one may be to tackle these endlessly busy days in his or her favorite pair of old running shoes with some seen-better-days sweatpants, being on the go and being on the go _in style_ can easily be made into the same thing.
So what’s the key to a day on the go? It’s all in aiming for stylish comfort, two things that despite popular belief actually do go hand-in-hand.
Luckily for us, there are tons of trends that fall right into that ideal on-the-go territory. One trend that’s been popping up all over the fashion scene, making for a super quick and easy staple to any outfit, is the simple T-shirt with words, sayings or logos printed on it. Think of the trend as, “what you’d find in your mom’s storage box from the ’80s” chic.
And let’s be honest, almost nothing’s comfier than a T-shirt. Forget diamonds. Cotton, ladies, is really our best friend.
Typically, if I go with a shirt with words on it, I like to make sure the shirt is a solid color with just simple black or white print. This way, I can throw in some other fun pieces without all the attention being drawn only to the tee. I like to pair my printed tees with brightly colored shorts, a bold necklace, my signature denim jacket and some shiny sandals. The combo is not only cute and springy, but it proves to keep me comfortable throughout the day, regardless of where my plans may take me.
Another trend inching its way into warm-weather on-the-go bliss is the “matchy-matchy” look. I’m talking the full spectrum of matching patterns to patterns, colors to colors and materials to materials. What’s more is, this is a trend totally accessible in garments made for our bustling lives.
Although you have to be careful with this look so as not to appear too “funky Aunt Faye got let loose at the thrift store again,” there are plenty of simple tricks to avoid having such a travesty take place.
A simpler way to accomplish this look is to go ‘matchy-matchy’ on your accessories. For instance, if you’re wearing a rose gold watch, pair it with a rose gold necklace, rose gold bracelets or a pile of rose gold rings. If you’re feeling bolder, try to find a statement necklace that contains multiple bright hues. Then pull out these hues through other accessories, such as similarly colored bangles or a bright pair of earrings.
My personal favorite way to pull off this look is by going with the classic Canadian tuxedo: denim on denim. I generally try to make sure either my shirt or shorts are a slightly lighter shade, but if you feel they still seem a little too clashy, break it up by tucking in the shirt and adding a belt.
We’re a people versed in the ways of blitzing, bustling and rushing throughout nearly all hours of the day. So heck, we might as well turn heads.
