The words “summer” and “carefree” go together like the words “pizza” and “college kids”. And while it’s great to walk around in a bikini and spend nights out with friends without having to worry about a 9 a.m. class, makeup is not one of those things we just forget about once the weather warms up. In fact, melting makeup is a concern that increases with the temperature. To make sure your makeup doesn’t slide around with your sweat, and to totally look like you woke up like this, read on:
**First things first: Sunscreen.** It’s technically not going to help makeup stay in place, but the importance of sunscreen cannot be stressed enough. Beautiful, bronzed skin is great, but skin cancer? Not so much.
Start every day with a layer of sunscreen, preferably SPF 30, even on your face, but opt for a lotion specifically formulated for the face to prevent breakouts. And no, the SPF 15 already in foundation is not enough.
Don’t want to look like a ghost all summer? Go with sunless tanning lotion to achieve that glowing look without also achieving a malignant mole. Budget-friendly options include Banana Boat Summer Color and Jergens Natural Glow, which are formulated for all skin tones.
**Step two: Foundation.** Since it’s summer and the caked-on look is more of a winter thing, if anything, skip foundation entirely if possible. Start with a green-tinted primer to neutralize any redness from breakouts or sunburns (although sunburns shouldn’t be an issue, because sunscreen is the first and most important step). Next, choose a lightweight tinted moisturizer or BB cream for all over. Good options include Covergirl Smoothers for very minimal, natural-looking coverage or Maybelline BB Cream for a slightly thicker option. Finally, cover up any acne or under-eye issues with a concealer.
**Step three: Bronzer, highlighter, and blush.** Now’s the chance to build up that summer glow without ever spending a moment in the sun. Brush blush across your cheekbones and highlighter right above that, forming a C-shape right above the eye. Now dust bronzer all over the places the sun hits the most—the top of your forehead, across the bridge of your nose, and lightly on your cheeks. Finally, get a large foundation brush and blend until it looks natural.
**Step four: Color.** If there’s any time to go bold, it’s now. Pick a pop of color for the eyes or lips, but avoid combining the two or risk looking overdone. Look for long-lasting eye color like Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Eyeshadow, which has a bunch of fun colors to choose from.
Another option is colored eyeliner. Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner lives up to its name and won’t come off with a little sweat. Finish off the look with a swipe of waterproof mascara like CoverGirl Clump Crusher Waterproof Mascara.
For colorful lips, the best option is to avoid lipstick entirely; it smudges easily in hot weather and dehydrates lips. Choose either a tinted lip balm or a lip stain for all-day color that won’t end up on everything.
