“The Purge: Anarchy” recently hit theaters, bringing the same gruesome and deathly action as its prequel, 2012’s “The Purge.”
The premise of “Anarchy” is very similar to that of its predecessor, but this time, more characters are caught up in the mayhem. The sequel brought together three different families with three different stories and showed the whole city of New York, rather than just one ritzy street like the first film did.
The annual Purge –– a night on which all crimes are made legal –– has now become a way for the government to get rid of poorer families and to eliminate citizens who aren’t making lots of money. Several apartment complexes and poor housing districts are attacked, but an unnamed local sergeant (Frank Grillo) comes to the rescue of one of the attacked families.
When another family’s car breaks down, the two families join together to seek help from the sergeant, who protects them from the horrific and bloody streets of New York.
Many people are graphically murdered while others “release the beast” within themselves. While citizens have protection from purgers, it is often only upper-class citizens who are made safe.
The movie raises moral questions, as some characters believe that the Purge is deplorable, while others think it’s fair. Some characters are drawn into the Purge as they fight just to stay alive, while others want to release built-up anger and hatred.
“The Purge: Anarchy” combines emotion with horror and makes for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think you can predict what will happen, the plot thickens.
No one is safe, and you can’t trust anyone. If you dare go see it, _stay safe._
_MOVE gives “The Purge: Anarchy” 3.5 out of 5 stars._
