Missouri coach Gary Pinkel moved his training camp practices from early morning to mid-afternoon so that his team could acclimate to the challenges of summer heat. But by the end of practice, Pinkel was shivering.
His mouth gaped after he completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a social media awareness campaign from the ALS Association that challenges participants to either dump a bucket of ice water over their heads or donate $100 to the association.
“It’s an ugly, ugly disease,” Pinkel said of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. “Hopefully, what (the ice bucket challenge) will do is it raises awareness for this cause, for the research and hopefully find an answer for this thing.”
Pinkel said he received the challenge from sophomore tight end Sean Culkin. The Mizzou coach in turn nominated Truman the Tiger, MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin and ESPN anchor John Anderson, a MU alum.
Pinkel said he had recently heard about the campaign and watched a few clips on YouTube of other people accepting the challenge.
“We want to be a part of (the campaign),” Pinkel said. “I just want everyone to realize it’s kind of fun with all the ice and the other thing, but the cause is more important.”

As of today, the association said it has received $15.6 million in donations since the campaign started July 29. The association claims to have received $1.8 million during that same time period last year.
