Missouri takes on the Toledo Rockets in the second week of the college football season. Here are five things to watch for in the matchup:
_1. How Pinkel and Mauk handle the homecoming pressure_
Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and quarterback Maty Mauk make their returns to the state of Ohio, where each grew up. Mauk set national high school records at Kenton High School in rural Kenton, Ohio — just over an hour away from Toledo. Pinkel not only grew up in Ohio, but also attended Kent State and was a ten-year head coach at Toledo, where he is the all-time winningest head coach in program history. It will be interesting to see how Pinkel and Mauk handle the pressure of coming back home.
_2. The role of Marcus Murphy_
Heading into the season, the expectation was that senior Marcus Murphy would split his time on the field between being a running back and a wide receiver. In Week One against South Dakota State, we saw a glimpse of what his role in this offense might be. Murphy had 12 total offensive touches in the game last week (nine rushes, three receptions). In addition, he had a 100-yard return touchdown. Murphy totaled 199 all-purpose yards in the game. His role should vary week-by-week, but his performance against SDSU should be a good barometer.
_3. Mizzou’s offensive continuity_
Following the game last week, Pinkel preached that Mizzou’s offense needed to show more continuity. The Tigers’ offense scored touchdowns on three of the their first four drives, but failed to score again until the fourth quarter, including a stretch of three drives that totaled 20 yards combined.
“Get the continuity on the practice field, play like your practice and carry that over to the games,” Pinkel said in his postgame press conference.
_4. The play of Toledo running back Kareem Hunt_
Much like last week, Mizzou will be faced with stopping a big running back in Kareem Hunt, who measures at 5-foot-11-inch, 200 pounds. The sophomore is a power runner, but he also offers some explosiveness. Last season, as a true freshman, Hunt appeared in 12 games, starting three. He ran for 866 yards and six touchdowns. In a 54-20 victory over New Hampshire last week, he ran for 136 yards and had two scores.
_5. Toledo kicker Jeremiah Detmer’s impact_
Toledo will not blow anyone out of the water, but they also do not beat themselves. Expect this game to be within 14 points or so during the fourth quarter. If the game is indeed close, Rockets kicker Jeremiah Detmer will definitely play a major factor in determining the outcome. Detmer has already inscribed himself in the Toledo record book as the program’s leader in career field goal percentage (87.7) and single-season field goals (24). He is also third on the list of career field goals made (50). This season, he is a candidate for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top placekicker.
