It wasn’t pretty, but it was still a win.
Missouri (5-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) marched into the Swamp and took care of business, stomping the Florida Gators 42-13 and ruining the homecoming celebration for Florida (3-3, 2-3).
Don’t let the score fool you, though. Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel did more to win this game for the Tigers than Mizzou’s Maty Mauk and Co.
Of the Tigers’ 42 points, a mere six came from the offense, a five-yard touchdown run by senior running back Marcus Murphy. Special teams accounted for two field goals and two touchdowns, while an inspired defensive effort added two more scores.
Here are a few takeaways from tonight’s victory.
**Offensive problems are still problems**
Nothing has been fixed since last week.
Against Georgia, the Missouri offense was shut out and held to only 147 total yards. Amazingly, the Tigers managed to play even worse against the Gators, limping their way to 121 yards.
The team did break its streak of 24 consecutive failed third-down conversions, but that was one of the few bright spots. Sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk led his squad into the red zone three times and came away with a touchdown only once. The Tigers were lucky to win this one given their offensive performance, and that’s going to have to change to stay in the thick of the SEC East race.
**Marcus Murphy set new heights**
Senior Marcus Murphy started his night off with a bang, returning the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. The return was the sixth return touchdown of his college career — a program record.
Murphy kept on rolling, scoring one touchdown on the ground — his first rushing touchdown of the season — and another on an 82-yard punt return for his third score of the day. It was the first time in his career that he scored three times in one game.
Murphy was solely responsible for half of the Tigers’ points tonight and did more than his fair share to earn the win.
**Tigers’ defense: Beasts of the East**
Six turnovers.
That was the reason for the Tigers’ blowout win. Three fumbles and three interceptions accounted for 24 of Missouri’s points and took points off the board for the Gators.
The Missouri defense provided a much-needed spark in the third quarter in particular. Junior defensive end Shane Ray busted through the offensive line and raked the ball away from Jeff Driskel before his senior teammate Markus Golden took it to the house.
The very next play from scrimmage, senior linebacker Darvin Ruise picked off Driskel and ran it 46 yards to the house.
Braylon Webb and Lucas Vincent also chipped in with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, respectively. There wasn’t a poor Mizzou defensive performance on the field tonight.
**A backup QB was the offensive player of the game**
Let that thought sink in for a moment.
Driskel and Mauk were so dreadfully bad that true freshman quarterback Treon Harris looked like the reincarnation of Tim Tebow. (Not quite. But close.)
Driskel placed himself and coach Will Muschamp onto the hot seat with a gut-punch performance. He did nothing to hold on to the ball and was arguably the defensive player of the game for the Tigers. He fumbled twice and threw two picks, not to mention the two defensive touchdowns surrendered on his watch.
Driskel did complete a touchdown pass, but it was for the wrong team.
Mauk was a less than stellar six for 18 passing for a whopping 20 yards. He averaged a very underwhelming 1.1 yards per pass attempt and did nothing to alleviate the Tigers offensive woes. Mauk connected with the wrong team again, throwing an interception in the first quarter, giving him six turnovers in three SEC games.
Both of these teams have major questions at quarterback and have to find answers soon to stay in the hunt for a trip to Atlanta.
