“St. Vincent” tells the story of a most unlikely friendship. The movie stars Bill Murray as Vincent, a retired war veteran with a penchant for alcohol and gambling, and Jaeden Lieberher as Oliver, a young boy whose mother (Melissa McCarthy) is divorcing his father. This friendship between the two seems like an awful idea, but throughout the movie, viewers learn that everyone has a story that makes them who they are, and Oliver sets to figure out Vincent’s.
One of the best things about this movie is that McCarthy didn’t play her typical role as the comical punch line, but rather a serious, hardworking and heartbroken mom. While Murray knows how to play the role of the scrooge all too well (see: 1988’s “Scrooged”), he took on the role of a nice, caring and selfless man who’s had his fair share of adventures in life with ease.
St. Vincent may have caused me to shed a few tears, but only tears of joy –– and happy tears are the best tears.
