Missouri won its final game in the Maui Invitational to finish 1-2 in the tournament. The Tigers beat Division II Chaminade 74-60, putting Mizzou’s record at 3-3 on the season.
**Williams III is injured**
Midway through the second half, sophomore forward Johnathan Williams III was sitting at the far end of the Tigers’ bench with his knee brace off. From that point forward, he did not return to the game. Williams has been working his way back from a meniscus injury, and it remains unclear whether the reinjury is serious or if the benching was precautionary.
**Freshmen shouldered the offensive load**
Freshman guard Namon Wright had by far his most productive game of the season for the Tigers, leading the way offensively with 21 points and a perfect 7-for-7 mark from the field. He knocked down all four of his long-range shots.
Fellow freshman guards Montaque Gill-Caesar and Tramaine Isabell had strong games as well, combining for 27 points — Gill-Caesar with 18, Isabell with 9. Like Wright, Gill-Caesar had a strong performance from three-point range, knocking down four of his eight attempts from beyond the arc. Isabell, meanwhile, attacked the basket and shot a perfect 4-for-4 on inside field goal attempts.
**Quiet outing for Shamburger**
While several guards had strong performances for the Tigers on Wednesday, senior Keith Shamburger was not one of them. Though Shamburger was 4-for-4 from the free throw line, he was also 0-for-6 from the field, including a 0-for-5 mark from three-point range. Shamburger’s calling card is his veteran presence, but he’ll need to turn things around in a hurry to keep playing time if younger guards continue to have outings like they did against Chaminade.
**Mizzou’s defense is inconsistent**
Missouri started Wednesday’s game on a 9-0 run. The Tigers didn’t give up a basket through the first 4:34 of play, nabbing three steals in the first two and a half minutes. It appeared the Tigers were on pace to have a very strong defensive performance.
However, Missouri turned the ball over four minutes in, Chaminade scored in transition and finally got on the board. Twenty-six seconds later, Silverswords guard Lee Bailey hit a three and just like that, Chaminade had started its own small run. The Tigers ultimately won the game with a comfortable 11-point margin, but still gave up 60 points and left Chaminade shooters open on the perimeter for easy three-pointers. The defense was serviceable enough to get the win, but will need work going forward.
