MUPD has been in contact with the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center regarding a threat posted Tuesday on the social media app Yik Yak.
The post read: “Let’s burn down the black culture center & give them a taste of their own medicine,” the [Columbia Missourian reported](http://www.columbiamissourian.com/a/182320/mu-police-monitoring-black-culture-center-after-it-was-threatened-on-yik-yak/).
MUPD spokesman Brian Weimer said Chief of Police Jack Watring spoke with the center on Tuesday afternoon.
The department does not know who wrote the threats, given the anonymous nature of the app, and is continuing to investigate the case, Weimer said.
“Everyone we have been in contact with MUPD and are working to address the situation at hand,” the [Black Cultural Center](@GOBCC) tweeted. “We will keep you updated.”
Weimer said the department will continue to watch Yik Yak for threats.
Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin [released a statement Tuesday evening](http://chancellor.missouri.edu/news/message-from-chancellor-loftin-12-2-14/) regarding comments on Yik Yak and other anonymous sites.
“I am shocked and disappointed that members of our student body would participate in such hateful and hurtful speech that perpetuates negative stereotypes of black students,” Loftin said in the statement.
