On Wednesday night, the Missouri softball team (32-10) defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes (16-34) by a score of 10-2, marking the Tigers’ seventh straight win and their fourth on a run rule.
Sophomore pitcher Tori Finucane started the game for the Tigers, but she allowed a two-run home run to Iowa shortstop Megan Blank in the first inning. Finucane would go on to retire the rest of the batters in the inning.
The Tiger offense made sure that the team did not trail for long. Junior center fielder Taylor Gadbois singled and was brought home on a double by the reigning National Player of the Week junior second basewoman Sami Fagan. Two walks loaded the bases for Mizzou and a high chopper by senior shortstop Corrin Genovese scored two runs. After the first inning, the Tigers led 3-2.
Freshman pitcher Paige Lowary took the circle for the Tigers in the top of the second. After a rough first inning for both pitchers, the game settled down as both Lowary and Iowa pitcher Shayla Starkenburg traded zeros on the scoreboard.
In the fifth inning, the Missouri offense finally broke through. After a walk by Fagan, sophomore catcher Kirsten Mack hit a two-run homerun. Next, freshman third basewoman Amanda Sanchez hit a single and was brought home on a double off the wall by senior first basewoman Kelsea Roth. After the side was retired, Missouri led 6-2.
Lowary continued her dominance over the Hawkeye hitters in the top half of the inning. To lead off the bottom of the inning, Gadbois singled and stole her fourth base, a career high, which also put her in sole possession of fourth all time in school history in stolen bases with 82.
A walk by junior right fielder Emily Crane put runners on the corners with Gadbois advancing on a past ball earlier in the at bat. Crane stole second and took third on an errant throw from the Iowa catcher. Gadbois scored and pushed the Missouri lead to five runs. After Mack reached on a walk, a Sanchez single scored two more runs. A Roth single brought home Sanchez to give the Tigers the win.
Missouri will play again at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Missouri State in Springfield. Following that the Tigers will come home for a series against No. 3 Louisiana State this weekend.
