A vigil was held Thursday night for the victims of the recent shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. The ceremony, organized by MU students and the African-American Clergy Coalition of Mid-Missouri, took place outside the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center in honor of the nine people killed Wednesday night at a historic black church in Charleston.
About 100 people from the MU and Columbia community gathered to pray, listen to poetry and sing together in remembrance. Participants held pictures of each of the victims and lit candles in their honor. Together, the group expressed their emotions about the recent tragedy and came together for strength. The ceremony concluded with the release of a balloon for each victim of the shooting.
