The Missouri Students Association Department of Student Activities sponsored the third annual Citizen’s Response to Active Threat Training as part of Safety Week. The event was held earlier this week at Memorial Union.
“Safety Week is presented by the Safe Mizzou Coalition of students, faculty and staff working together to share information about the safety at Mizzou,” said Kathy Murray, the associate director of Department of Student Life.
The training session informed students about prior active shooter incidents that have occurred throughout the country within the past two decades.
The session highlighted how students, faculty and staff responded to the events and how first responders handled the scene.
CRAT training emphasizes the importance of students being aware of their surroundings, and it provides tips to help prepare them to take action in instances of imposed danger. About 30 students attended.
“It’s a really good program, but it is sad to see how few come,” doctoral student Arianna Soldati said. Soldati attended the event last year as well.
Students from the Department of Student Activities hosted the event.
“We are here so we can perform our jobs better and safer,” sophomore Adam Bexten said.
Resources for the safety and well-being of MU students, faculty and staff include the Counseling Center, the MU Police Department, MU Campus Facilities, MU Environmental Health and Safety and the Employee Assistance Program.

“We have first responders and coordinators, but it is up to us students to create a safer environment,” said Christina Walls, production assistant for the Department of Student Life.
