McDavid Hall students provided cotton candy, popcorn, spray painting and a tour through their very own McDavid asylum to get students in the Halloween spirit.

The event was entitled the Freaky FARC-er Fright Fest after the Fine Arts Residential Community of McDavid Hall. Students within the community who are members of the McDavid Arts Advocates club hosted the event at McDavid and Loeb Lawn from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday.

The cost to attend was $4 for general admission but $2 with a student ID. All proceeds went toward Access Arts, a charity that “helps people of all ages with disabilities,” freshman Courtni Fields said.

“It helps them to create a community through art which is what our dorm is all about,” Fields said.

McDavid residents spent two months planning and preparing for the event.

The haunted house was decorated like a 1950s asylum.

Freshman Haley Bordelon played the role of the head nurse. She guided visitors through rooms with varying scenes including a shock therapy room, a padded room, a room filled with fake blood and a room that included dismembered dolls.

“It reminded me of the book, ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ by Ken Kesey,” sophomore Carson Luther said. “It’s about the stories of people in a mental institution. The haunted house’s shock therapy room, the lobotomy room and the people in the lounge looking at the TV without anything playing on it reminded me of that book.”

Seventy-five people took the McDavid asylum tour within the first hour.

Attendees also had the opportunity to spray paint sheets with symbols and phrases related to Halloween including pumpkins and phrases from scary movies.

The sheets were donated by the Broadway Hotel and will be hung in the McDavid art gallery.

Additional donated sheets were used for decorations and costumes.

Signs that read “Get Out” and “Help” were also used for decoration while strobe lights and Halloween music appealed to visitors as well.

“The lights were a good effect,” freshman Taylor Nettles said. “They added to the suspense, and made the people inside who were acting look like they were moving faster.”

Music included “The Monster Mash” and “The Addams Family” and “Ghostbusters” theme songs.

“The event was a fun way to get people out here for Halloween,” freshman McDavid resident David Burks said. “We enjoyed making it, and I think people enjoyed coming to it. It was a good time.”
