After a disappointing showing at the Southeastern Conference Championships, the men’s and women’s cross-country teams look to rebound at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The meet will take place on Friday, Nov. 13 in Lawrence, Kansas.
The top two team finishers earn a spot at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Additionally, the top four individual finishers that are not on qualifying teams make the national meet.
The Tigers have one returning national qualifier: sophomore Karissa Schweizer.
“Certainly Karissa has the background,” coach Marc Burns said. “She did it last year and she’s running great right now, running better than she was last year. She certainly has a great opportunity to do that again.”
The Tiger women are ranked eighth out of 32 teams, while the men are seeded tenth out of 29.
Though he knows it will be challenging, Burns feels that finishing in the top five teams at the meet is a goal for both the men and women.
Another fun aspect of the meet will be racing against Kansas, Mizzou’s longtime rival, on the Jayhawks’ home turf.
“The only time we get to compete over there is during the NCAA tournament,” Burns said. “Obviously a big goal of ours is going to be to go after KU on their home course.”
The Tigers will look for strong showings from Schweizer and junior Teylar Adelsberger on the women’s side. Schweizer has consistently been the Tigers’ top finisher in 2015, and [Adelsberger has enjoyed a breakout season](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2015/11/4/adelsberger-enjoys-hard-earned-breakout-season/).
Juniors Jordan Cook and Dan Roe have been strong runners throughout the season on the men’s side. The men’s top finishers have varied throughout the season, but Cook and Roe have normally been among the first Tigers to cross the line.
At the Midwest Regional last season, the men and women finished 17th and sixth, respectively.
