In this moment in my people’s history, I feel that it would be highly disrespectful of me to carry on with the latest fashion trends in the world as if there were not turmoil right under my nose. It is very hard for me to task myself with creating a false persona for purposes of entertaining an audience; I am not happy nor do I have a reason to be.
MU is in disarray. Tensions are high and seem to be getting higher. After doing research, I have found a good amount of information on adequate attire to wear when marching. In this day and age, a peaceful protest can turn into a violent outrage. We need to see that our students are safe in any situation.
Police recommended that you outfit yourself in long clothes to protect your skin from any gas substances that can be thrown your way. In addition, cotton or wool clothes are the best fabric options because they are not flammable. Take into consideration wearing heavy boots to protect your feet from dangerous scatterings on the floor, a bandana to cover your face in the case of tear gas and also a backpack filled with books to act as a shield. Consider tying up your hair and not wearing jewelry that could get caught on something.
In this moment, being chic is far from what you are trying to achieve. Safety should be our biggest priority at the moment. I pray it won’t have to come to our students having ready their armor for battle, but all we can do now is #PrayForMizzou.
