And the renewed Border War hype is over just as quickly as it started.
For the first time in four years, the Missouri and Kansas volleyball teams met on the court. This time, it was to battle for a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. Although the Tigers lead the all-time series 51-35, the Jayhawks walked away with a 3-0 sweep at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center in Lawrence.
The first set was characterized by a weak attack and unusual errors for the Tigers that led to a 16-25 loss. Sophomore Kira Larson and junior Carly Kan led the team with three kills each.
Strong blocking for Kansas combined with Mizzou’s struggle to find an offensive rhythm led to the second set loss 13-25. Strong blocking was a pattern for the Jayhawks, who finished the night with 11 total blocks. The Tigers trailed closely with 10.
The third and final set was the anticipated back-and-forth battle between long time rivals. The Tigers came to life and the momentum lead them to a 24-20 lead. But, after multiple long rallies, the Jayhawks claimed the match 27-25.
And with that, the Tigers ended their season with a final record of 27-6, the fifth-highest number of victories in a single season in program history.
“This team should be really proud of its accomplishments this season,” Tigers coach Wayne Kreklow said in a news release. “Our ladies showed incredible resiliency and passion all season long. I’m very proud of this squad.”
