The Buffaloes were close, just not close enough.

The Missouri women’s basketball team traveled to Boulder to take on Colorado for its tightest game of the season so far, just barely getting away with the win.

While the Tigers started the first quarter shooting well, leading the Buffs by five, Colorado soon bounced back to outscore Mizzou 29-17 in the second quarter.

Down by seven at halftime and trailing the majority of the third quarter, sophomore Kayla McDowell put her team in the lead with 15 seconds left. After tying it up in the third, a 3-pointer from Lindsey Cunningham sealed a 70-67 lead that the team would ride until the final buzzer. The Tigers pulled away, 79-75.

The win moves Mizzou to 29-42 all time against Colorado. Before this single digit win, the closest margin of victory was 13 points earlier in the preseason against Wake Forest.

This win, though, holds a different importance. Improving to 10-0 on the season, the Tigers have achieved their best-ever start.

Junior guard Sierra Michaelis and freshman forward Cierra Porter combined for over half the team’s points with 21 points a piece. Despite the team’s undefeated preseason thus far, coach Robin Pingeton and the players know they have a long way to go.

“We’ve got bigger goals and a bigger picture in mind,” Pingeton said in a post-game press release. “We’ve got to continue to get better and continue to work hard, although we are very pleased with where we are at.”

After an academic break for finals, the team will return home for back to back games against Lamar, then Texas State on Dec. 20 and 21.
