2016 is the year of ’90s revivals.
The second episode of X-Files, which aired Jan. 25 on FOX, was the highest-rated broadcast program of the night. Netflix recently announced the Feb. 26 premiere date for Fuller House, the follow-up to the popular sitcom Full House. Rumors of a Spice Girls reunion have been floating around in response to their upcoming 20th anniversary and the Friends cast is finally reuniting after years and years of speculation.
So much of the ’90s is coming back in full force, it’s only a matter of time before we start to see some fashion trends start to repeat themselves. In fact, I think it’s already begun.
Now I, like many people, have spent a good chunk of my life marathoning ’90s television shows that I didn’t get to experience first hand. While I do enjoy the actual storylines, seeing the style evolution of characters is one of my favorite things about watching old television. Like any decade, ’90s fashion had a lot of hits and a lot of misses. I want to help you keep the hits and leave the misses.
**Leave: Overly-baggy jeans**
Yikes. I’m all for variety in legwear, but these jeans should not make a reappearance. Rule of thumb: If you can fit another person in your pants with you, they’re too big.
**Keep: Colorful Winter Jackets**
Seeing a sea of black winter coats can be a little depressing during a gloomy season. Colorful jackets can brighten any day.
**Leave: Sky-High Platform Shoes**
I don’t quite understand how you walk in these, but you really shouldn’t. The Spice Girls made girl power and platforms popular; bring back the girl power, forget the platforms.
**Keep: Doc Martens**
I wonder how many times I can mention that I love boots this semester. In particular, Doc Martens’ line of badass shoes make you look effortlessly cooler. With so many styles, you’ll never be bored.
**Leave: Any hairstyle from the ’90s**
Frosted tips and the “Rachel” were very prominent at the time. We don’t need to see these styles re-emerge to know they really should stay dead.
**Keep: Cher Horowitz as your fashion icon**
Her yellow plaid skirt-blazer combo may be one of the most iconic looks from film in the ’90s. Update her look for 2016 with a matching crop top and skirt, and be envious of her revolving closet.
