It’s no secret that the “Star Wars” heroines know how to do hair.
Leia Organa’s hair buns from “A New Hope” are iconic, Padme Amidala’s hairstyles in the prequels were somehow even more complex than the styles from the original trilogy, and Rey’s three half-ponytails are sure to be emulated by little girls everywhere.
Ever since I spent most of my winter break watching the “Star Wars” series, I’ve wanted to try and recreate some of my favorite hairstyles. This is my step-by-step guide to looks from each of the heroines.
**Leia’s Hoth Braid Crown** (photo #1)
This look is a variation on Leia’s Hoth braid crown — in my opinion, Leia’s best look. Because I was working with shorter hair, I had to get creative with the way I wrapped the braid, but in the end, the hairstyle looked pretty good. You are going to need hair ties and bobby pins.
Split the hair into two pigtails, keeping the part as far over as possible. I put the hair in a left part. Put a hair tie on one pigtail.
With the other pigtail, in this case the larger side of the part, begin a Dutch braid. The braid should start as close to the part as possible. A Dutch braid is an “inside out” french braid and there are many great tutorials for it [online](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muqfT7Sy5is).
1) Keep braiding until you run out of hair. Tie it off with a hair tie.
2) Repeat step two and three with the other pigtail.
3) When you are done, take the two braids and wrap them around the back of the head. Use bobby pins to hold them in place.
4) Ideally, the braids should tuck into each other to help hide where each braid ends and the other begins.
**Rey’s Triple Half-Ponytails** (photo #2)
This hairstyle looks pretty simple, but it can be difficult to coordinate. Thinner hair makes it easier for this look to work. You are going to need hair ties and bobby pins.
1) Section off the hair into three ponytails with hair ties: one at the top of the head, one in the middle and one by the neck.
2) Start with the top ponytail. Take out the hair tie and put it back in, but this time making sure to leave a section of hair separate from the rest. When you put the rest of the hair back up, don’t pull the hair all the way through the hair tie to get the half-ponytail look.
3) Once you have your half-ponytail, take the section you left out and wrap it around the hair tie. Pin it in place with bobby pins.
Repeat steps two and three with the last two ponytails.
**Padme’s Perfect Curls** (photo #3)
Padme’s hairstyles are all unnecessarily complicated, but her curled look is one that anyone can do if they have the time. You are going to need a curling iron, hair spray, a hair tie and bobby pins.
1) Start off by putting up half of the hair up in a messy bun to make it easier to curl. As you finish curling a section, take down more and more hair.
2) Curl small sections of the hair, holding the hair in the curling iron for about 15 seconds. Be sure to wrap the curls away from your face so that they frame it, instead of getting in the way.
3) Hairspray it in place, but don’t use too much. Too much hairspray leaves the hair crunchy.
4) Repeat until you have done the entire section of hair. Then continue on and do the rest of the hair that you put up.
5) When you are done curling, pin the front strands away from your face, and then you’re done.
Of course, there are so many more hairstyles you can recreate from the Star Wars movies. You can always find great tutorials on YouTube and Pinterest, or just try and replicate the hair-do by looking at a photo. Grab your friends, Star Wars DVDs and make it a party!
