On Sunday afternoon, the No. 6 Missouri wrestling team traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, to battle No. 11 Nebraska and emerged victorious, winning 19-14 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals.
After going back and forth, winning one match and then losing the next, Missouri’s heavier weights dominated their Nebraska opponents to seal the victory. Junior J’den Cox became the 24th Tiger to win 100 matches, and he became the fastest Missouri wrestler to do so.
No. 11 sophomore Barlow McGhee started the match off at 125 pounds with a victory over No. 12 Tim Lambert 5-3. No. 14 junior Zach Synon then lost to No. 9 Eric Montoya 3-0 in the 133 weight class. Next. 141-pounder and No. 6 junior Matt Manley came back to win 6-2 over No. 19 Anthony Abidin.
In the 149-pound weight class, No. 3 junior Lavion Mayes lost his first match of the season against No. 4 Jake Sueflohn 4-1. No. 29 157-pound senior Le’Roy Barnes also lost to No. 19 Tyler Berger, putting Nebraska up 10-6 over Missouri.
No. 4 redshirt freshman Daniel Lewis did not let No. 9 Austin Wilson score a point on him in the 165-pound match, winning 4-0 and starting the Missouri comeback. At 174 pounds, No. 5 senior Blaise Butler came back late in the third period to defeat No. 20 Micah Barnes 7-5 to put Missouri back on top of the team score.
Sophomore Willie Miklus, who is ranked No. 11, scored a takedown at the buzzer to win 5-4 over No. 6 TJ Dudley. The win was a big one for Miklus, who had taken time off earlier in the season because of a hurt ankle. At 197 pounds, No. 2 Cox scored seven takedowns to win by major decision 16-7 over No. 10 Aaron Studebaker. To end the match, heavyweight Cody Johnston lost 9-1 to Collin Jensen.
Missouri heads to Ypsilanti, Michigan, to defend its three-time MAC Conference title March 5–6, with individual wrestlers looking to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships on March 17–19.
