Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, proposed the creation of the “University of Missouri System Review Commission” on Tuesday in a [news release](http://www.senate.mo.gov/senator-kurt-schaefer-introduces-resolution-to-create-the-university-of-missouri-system-review-commission/). The commission intends to review various rules, regulations, structures, activities and programs in the UM System, and come up with recommendations or changes related to the system, according to the release.

The commission will provide a detailed report to the Missouri General Assembly leadership by Dec. 31, 2016. The report will include all the recommended changes to the UM System. The General Assembly will judge whether MU successfully adopted the commission’s recommendations in next year appropriation process, which may factor into decisions regarding MU’s budget.

The task force will have eight members. President Pro Tempore of the Senate Ron Richard, R-Joplin, and Speaker of the House Todd Richardson, R-Poplar Bluff, will each appoint four members. Potential task force members should be experienced and informative in “governance, management and understanding of school leadership and instruction,” according to the release.

The Department of Higher Education will cover the expenses of the commission, along with reimbursements for its members and staffs, the release stated.

“This step is necessary to ensure the long-term survival and growth of this capable institution, and to earn back the trust and respect that has been lost through a series of recent poor decisions,” Schaefer said in the statement.
