The 2015–16 Missouri Women’s basketball season ended Monday night following a loss in Austin, Texas, to No. 2 seed Texas Longhorns. The Tigers, who garnered a wonderful 23-point performance from freshman Sophie Cunningham, could not overcome the complete team performance by the Longhorns.

In what was a home game for Texas, Mizzou entered Monday’s contest following an upset win over the Brigham Young Cougars over the weekend, their first tournament win since the 2001 season. Unfortunately, this season came to a halt just short of the Sweet 16.

Sophie Cunningham still had a wonderful night. Hitting two threes in the opening five minutes, it seemed the freshman would go on to have another typical, yet stellar performance to cap the night. The young star led her team in total points and racked up six rebounds and four assists to end the night.

Still, on the other side of the ball, Texas’ Ariel Atkins drained several key shots and played very physically. The Longhorns seemed to just be the better team on the court in the manner that they moved off the ball and counterattacked.

The Tigers went behind early in the game and just could not recover. The physicality against Texas wasn’t matched and the all around team play Missouri so desperately needed just didn’t come through in the end.

Texas finished out the game by winning 73–55 and forced the Tigers to turn the ball over 18 times, a recurring issue that has plagued the Tigers all season. The loss in general told the story of the season. Impressive performances by one or two players, but the team play in total was severely lacking and ultimately was the difference in the outcome of the game.

However, it was a fantastic season and there is plenty the Mizzou can take home from this game and this season. A superstar freshman, a promising future and a hungry coach will certainly go a long way.
