As expected, a lot happened at Coachella last weekend. Every year, there are always guest appearances and surprises to keep festival-goers on their toes. Last weekend, Kristen Wiig, Bernie Sanders, Kanye West and more all made cameos during performances. Take a look at MOVE’s top five favorite surprises at Coachella this year.
#### 5. LINDSEY STIRLING/KAMASI WASHINGTON AT ROBERT DELONG
During indie-electronic artist Robert DeLong’s set, DeLong invited jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington onstage for a saxophone/drum jam session. Washington performed his set on Sunday, and DeLong advised the audience to go check him out. When DeLong started playing his hit single, “Long Way Down,” he brought out dubstep violinist Lindsey Stirling to perform the song with him. Both cameos resulted in an excellent combination of classical and electronic instrumentation.
#### 4. BRENDON URIE AT HALSEY
Toward the end of her set, 21-year-old indie-pop vocalist Halsey brought out her proclaimed musical hero, Brendon Urie from Panic! At The Disco. Halsey and Urie sang a duet on her hit single, “New Americana,” and Panic! At The Disco’s breakthrough single, “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” She thanked him for his guest appearance later on Twitter, thanking Urie for “performing with a girl who sat at 14 and sang all (his) songs with fierce determination to be just like (him) one day.”
#### 3. THE ARCS’ EPIC GUITAR JAM
As if The Arcs wasn’t enough of a supergroup (featuring The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and The Shins’ Richard Swift), the blues-rock outfit invited The Eagles’ Joe Walsh and the man who taught Walsh how to play guitar, Glenn Schwartz, onstage for an epic guitar jam. They performed a couple of Schwartz’s songs before The Arcs closed with their single “Outta My Mind.”
#### 2. KRISTEN WIIG/PAUL DANO/MADDIE ZIEGLER AT SIA
Pop songwriter Sia is famous for the blonde wig that veils her face and the dancers that surround her during her performances. But for Coachella, Sia had actors Kristen Wiig and Paul Dano on-screen interpreting some of her songs and dancer Maddie Ziegler onstage dancing around Sia herself. Considering this was the singer’s first full set since 2011, there had to be a way to commemorate the occasion.
#### 1. BERNIE SANDERS INTRODUCES RUN THE JEWELS
Shortly before rap duo Run the Jewels came onstage, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders came on the big screen with a video message to introduce the rappers. Sanders says that “one of the highlights of running for president over the course of this last year has been getting to know Killer Mike.” Sanders also told El-P to “keep up the great work.” You could say it was pretty unexpected (albeit awesome) to see the Democratic presidential candidate make an appearance at Coachella.
