The campus sidewalks are abuzz with news of the concert this week at Rose Music Hall. If you haven’t seen the chalk on the sidewalk, you’re in the right place.
####The lowdown
On Sept. 8, local bands Mangosteen and The Motel Brothers are playing at Rose Music Hall for only $5 with special guest The Blue Hearts Club. Factor in Thirsty Thursdays downtown and the almost-Friday atmosphere of the show, and it’s a perfect time for anyone who wants to experience Columbia.
While each band has its own personality, the alternative styles are sure to make this Thursday night show one to remember. I’ll see you there.
####The bands
The Motel Brothers, who got together back in 2013, are an acoustic band with hip-hop vocals, and are everything I’ve ever wanted in a band. Energetic, smooth sounds paired with funny and relatable lyrics make the band a great listen. Their Soundcloud has their most recent EP, released in May of this year. Imagine acoustic versions of your favorite rapper’s singles and you get The Motel Brothers.
Mangosteen is an alternative band that focuses on more soul music, and has the instrumentals to back it up. The bass and drums support the vocals, but they are strong enough to stand on their own during vocal breaks.
The Blue Hearts Club is a fun band that will be important to watch. In their song “One Thing,” one of the first lyrics is “why are all the best things talked about like sins” and not only is it fun, but it’s upbeat. For a young band, they have a mature style.
####Parking
Rose Music Hall is surrounded by places to park on the street, and the metered spots only run until 7 p.m. The garage on Cherry and Eighth streets is a bit more of a walk for this show and will probably take you closer to 10 minutes to walk to the venue.
Considering we walk around campus all day, 10 minutes doesn’t seem like a long walk, so it’s up to you. There’s no need to stop for food along the way because Rose Music Hall has Pepe’s serving tacos and more from their kitchen any time they’re open.
####Noteworthy tunes
**_This Song About You_ by The Motel Brothers**
This song is the perfect break-up song, which makes it the ideal song to play at a concert. I can guarantee that if they play this at Thursday’s show, the crowd will be singing along.
**_I Want You To Know_ by The Motel Brothers**
As much as “This Song About You” is a break-up song, “I Want You To Know” is a romantic song. The lyrics are so sweet and layered over awesome acoustics, which makes me feel warm inside.
**_She’s a Lady_ by Mangosteen**
With a slow opening, sweet-sounding vocals and a moderate drop, this song is going to be a dance hit Thursday night.
