When Ray Wingo was a senior at St. Louis University High School, he never had more than 100 receiving yards in a game. In fact, he only had 241 receiving yards in his final high school season.
It appears Wingo has improved since 2013.
The redshirt sophomore caught three passes for 125 yards on Saturday against Eastern Michigan, scoring the first touchdown of his collegiate career.
Gary Kornfeld, Wingo’s high school coach, was thrilled for his former player.
“So happy and so excited for Ray and Mizzou … Ray can light it up,” he said in an e-mail to The Maneater Saturday night.
He wasn’t the only one happy with Wingo’s showing.
“That was awesome,” sophomore quarterback Drew Lock said. “Ray definitely wants it bad … it was just cool to let (the receivers) get in the flow of things.”
Unlike Saturday night, Wingo did not have much of an opportunity to get in a rhythm in 2015. He caught only four passes for 24 yards, playing in only nine games.
The St. Louis native said he has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself, and he enjoyed scoring his first touchdown as a Tiger.
“It was good, man,” he said. “I’m gonna just be honest with you, this my hometown. I’ve just been waiting, just been waiting on my opportunity.”
Junior tight end Jason Reese said Wingo is one of the fastest players on the Missouri team.
“I’m glad he finally had his coming-out party tonight,” Reese said.
Coach Barry Odom is also impressed with Wingo’s speed, saying he has the ability, “to take the ball the distance when he gets a crease.”
Whenever a deep pass comes Wingo’s way, he has only one thing on his mind: score.
“Score, score,” Wingo said. “That’s all I think. Score, score, score.”
If he continues to develop his potential, he could be doing a lot more of that in a Tigers uniform.
