This week, instead of writing about a boy band or the likes, I’m giving the attention to the ladies with this week’s column.
####The lowdown
On Oct. 3, alternative artist Melanie Martinez will be performing in Jesse Auditorium presented by The Blue Note. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. before the 7:30 p.m. show. Tickets to the concert are anywhere from $20-33 depending on where the seats are located. Martinez will be joined by indie artist Handsome Ghost.
####The bands
Melanie Martinez is an alternative musician who has performed for Billboard and on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and is on her second tour. Martinez has a unique sound that has gotten her music featured in a commercial for hit TV show _American Horror Story._ Not only does Martinez offer an original sound; she provides interesting music videos featuring messages about childhood, which is a common theme throughout her work. With an album titled _Cry Baby,_ songs like “Doll House” and Martinez’s performance outfits that make her resemble a doll, there is a definite message to be taken from her work (even if I’m not totally sure what it is).
Accompanying Martinez on Monday is Tim Noyes, known as Handsome Ghost, who released a new song, “Promises,” which he claims is his “pledge to be better.” According to The Blue Note, Noyes was originally an English teacher but has also been writing songs since college.
####Noteworthy Tunes
**“Mad Hatter”** by Melanie Martinez
Much like its namesake in _Alice in Wonderland,_ this song has a fantastical vibe that makes for a great listen. This is the last song on her album, which provides the closure you can expect to feel after the performance on Monday.
**“Pity Party”** by Melanie Martinez
You’ve likely heard this on the radio, and it’s one of Martinez’s most popular songs. It mixes a great beat with fun, yet slow, lyric styling. The song, like all of Martinez’s work, is strange, but good.
**“Cake”** by Melanie Martinez
This is the kind of sassy song you sing after a boy messes with your friend. If you don’t know what I mean, take Fall Out Boy’s song “Thnks fr th Mmrs.” (“Who does he think he is?”)
####If you like this, try…
**“Empty Gold”** by Halsey
While no artist can be the same as Melanie Martinez, Halsey has a lot of similarities to the artist. Both use interesting background tones and noises, like popping and water, and similarities can be drawn between the lyrical stylings.
**“Magnets”** by Disclosure ft. Lorde
This song embodies Martinez’s signature feminine tone while mimicking Handsome Ghost’s electronic music sound.
