Missouri volleyball controlled the court inside Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday to complete another SEC sweep.
The Tigers (21-4, 12-1) were tough offensively and beat No. 18 Kentucky (18-6, 11-2) in three straight sets.
The win was Missouri’s first sweep on the road over a top-20 ranked opponent since 2013, the year Missouri won the Southeastern Conference Championship.
The Tigers had 46 kills on .382 hitting throughout the match. Thirteen of those came in the first set, which Missouri won 25-18. Twenty-one more came in the second set, which Missouri won 25-21.
Missouri defense led the way to the 25-19 third-set victory when when it allowed Kentucky only a .161 hitting percentage and had three total blocks.
Junior Melanie Crow had a team-high 15 kills on .333 hitting. Crow started the first set off strong with seven kills on .600 hitting. She secured her 300th kill of the season during Sunday’s match.
Senior Carly Kan influenced the Tigers’ offense as well, with 12 kills on .333 hitting. Seven of those kills came in the second set. Junior Kira Larson followed with seven kills on .429 hitting. Five of Larson’s kills came in the second set as well.
Missouri is unranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll as of last week. Kentucky was ranked No. 18 in the Oct. 31 poll, so Missouri has a chance at breaking into the rankings this week.
The Tigers head back to Columbia for a week full of practice and no matches. The team travels to South Carolina next Sunday at 3 p.m. The next ranked opponent for the Tigers comes Sunday, Nov. 20, when they play No. 6 Florida. Missouri has five more games before the postseason starts.
