Junior swimmer Hannah Stevens is set to make her U.S. National Team debut Saturday in Indianapolis. The backstroker will compete at the USA College Challenge, a dual meet between the U.S. National Team and an all-star team of Big Ten swimmers.
Stevens finished fifth in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2016 Olympic Trials, and she received first-team All-American honors in March as part of Missouri’s 400-yard medley relay. She is a member of the U.S. National Team in the 100-meter backstroke.
Missouri coach Mark Gangloff knows the excitement of swimming for America; he competed at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Stevens said he approached her after she received her Team USA gear.
“I bet that felt good,” Gangloff said to her.
For Stevens, representing the U.S. is a thrilling opportunity.
“I’m truly excited,” she said. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of.”
Olympic medalists Leah Smith, Kelsi Worrell and Amanda Weir will join Stevens on the U.S. National Team.
Stevens will swim the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at the meet, and she could also be put on a relay for the U.S. National Team. Saturday’s session begins at 3:30 p.m. and can be watched on the Big Ten Network.
