After two separate protests outside his office over the past two weeks, Sen. Roy Blunt voted to confirm President Donald Trump’s pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos.
The protests were in response to Trump’s cabinet nominees as well as other policies. The first took place Jan. 31 with 100 people in attendance. The second, mostly comprised of local educators, took place Monday and focused more on DeVos’ confirmation.
DeVos has received criticism for a history of supporting charter schools and lack of an educational background. In her hearing, she wouldn’t commit to upholding directives in Title IX administration made under Barack Obama’s presidency.
“It would be premature for me to do that today,” she said when asked if she would hold up guidance from 2011 applying Title IX to sexual assault.
The DeVos family donated almost $30,000 to Blunt in 2016, according to the Federal Election Commission.
