The Missouri women’s tennis team was home for some brief practice sessions this week before hitting the road for its matchup Friday against Kansas State. After falling behind in both doubles and singles competition, the Tigers rallied and picked up a 4-3 victory.
Senior Cassidy Spearman led the Tigers, picking up wins in her doubles and singles matches.
Missouri fell behind early in the doubles matchups. In two of the three matches, the Tigers found themselves down 1-3. But they once again showed great resiliency, a word that has defined the early season for the Tigers. Spearman and fellow senior Bea Machado Santos battled back from their deficit, picking up a 7-5 victory.
Junior Amina Ismail and freshman Mackenzy Middlebrooks thoroughly controlled their opponents in the No. 3 position, picking up a 6-3 win.
In singles, Missouri once again struggled early. Brianna Lashway and Claire Sullivan quickly surrendered losses, giving Kansas State the 2-1 lead.
It was then up to the middle of Missouri’s lineup, and they did not disappoint. Spearman quickly answered picking up a 6-2, 7-5 victory, her first singles win in the spring season.
Middlebrooks immediately followed, earning a win after her opponent was unable to continue due to injury. Middlebrooks’ victory placed the Tigers one win away from the overall match victory, taking a 3-2 lead. Middlebrooks improved her singles record to 3-0 in the spring season.
Mizzou had to depend on freshman Tate Schroeder to secure the victory, and this season, there has been no one more reliable. Schroeder comfortably earned the victory 6-4, 6-4. The win improves Schroeder’s record to 4-0 in singles competition and secured the Tigers their fourth victory on the season, improving their record to 4-1.
Missouri will travel to Kansas City for their busy Sunday schedule. The Tigers will face Wichita State at 9 a.m. and UM-Kansas City at 6 p.m.
