Missouri softball fell to Nebraska and California-Santa Barbara on Saturday, losing three of five games at the Mary Nutter Classic in California.
It was a disappointing final day for the Tigers, who scored a huge win against No. 7 Washington on Friday night. The Tigers now sit at 7-5 on the season as they return to Columbia for their first home tournament next weekend.
In the first game, Nebraska silenced Missouri’s offensive attack, winning 5-1. Missouri had just two hits all game, with senior Natalie Fleming delivering the only RBI of the game.
Missouri looked poised to split the day, leading UCSB by three runs entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Then, everything fell apart.
Two runs scored after an error by sophomore left fielder Raime Cohen, which set the stage for a walk-off home run for the Gauchos.
Errors were a common theme for the Tigers over the weekend, and the team committed three of them between the two games. This led directly to runs for the opposition. Only four of the 10 runs scored by Nebraska and UCSB were earned.
Sophomore Danielle Baumgartner started the matchup against Nebraska and was tagged with the loss. Senior Cheyenne Baxter started on the mound against UCSB, allowing one earned run in her four innings of work. Baumgartner took the loss in relief, and her record on the season now falls to 1-3.
Senior Kirsten Mack drove in two runs and hit her first home run of the season against UCSB, capping a strong weekend for the senior. Mack finished the weekend with five RBIs.
The Tigers have a chance to bounce back next week in the Mizzou Tournament. The tournament will take place at the Tigers’ new field and offers another chance for the Tigers to take on a top-10 team in the country.
Missouri’s first game is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday against No. 5 Oregon. Missouri will play six games over the course of the weekend against Oregon, Stephen F. Austin, Maryland and Butler.
