Missouri soccer’s losing streak stretched to three games Sunday as the Tigers fell in a 2-1 double overtime loss to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
After being shut out in the previous three contests, the Tigers’ three-match scoring drought was ended by the foot of freshman Tess Rellihan, who netted the game’s opening goal in the 11th minute. The early score would be the only one produced by Missouri in the match and was not enough to outlast the Horned Frogs.
For the second consecutive match, the Tigers finished with 18 fouls, and it was the lack of discipline that cost them against TCU, especially late. A foul in the box by Missouri freshman Mo Adesanmi on TCU senior Emma Heckendorn would set up the game-winning penalty kick. TCU forward Allison Ganter, who also scored the Horned Frogs’ lone goal in regulation, took advantage of the opportunity and slotted the PK past Tigers goalie Kelsey Dossey for the win.
The first half was dominated by Mizzou. From the start, Mizzou was aggressive offensively. Rellihan scored in the 11th minute assisted by senior Savannah Trujillo . Rellihan took the cross, stumbled at first and then scored her first career goal, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
Defensively, the Tigers were stout. TCU was unable to create any scoring opportunities and didn’t have a shot in the first half.
Offensively in the second half, the roles were reversed. TCU outshot Mizzou 8-2 and evened up the score in the 65th minute, when Ganter blasted a rebound off the far left post into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
After 90 minutes of play, the score was still knotted up at 1-1. In the first overtime period, Mizzou was extremely active. Offensive pressure forced TCU’s sophomore goalkeeper Katie Lund to make three saves in the period.
However, the play of the game was the penalty on Heckendorn right inside the box. This set up Ganter’s second goal of the game. Dossey guessed correctly, as the shot was sent into the upper left-hand corner. But Ganter’s shot went just past Dossey’s outreached hand to give the Horned Frogs the win.
Mizzou returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 7 against Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois.
