By now, most Missouri sports fans have heard about the records Missouri football broke on Saturday against Missouri State. What fans might not have noticed this weekend was the impressive showing the men’s golf team had at the Turning Stone-Tiger Intercollegiate in Verona, New York.
Mizzou dominated the 54-hole tournament from start to finish and ended up scoring 20 under par. North Carolina-Wilmington finished in second, 50 strokes behind the Tigers at 30 over par.
This was the sixth year in a row that the Tigers have won at Turning Stone, but this weekend’s victory marked their largest win. Their previous record lead at the event came back in 2013 when the Tigers won by 25 strokes.
Each of the golfers featured in coach Mark Leroux’s lineup finished in the top five individually, with senior Hayden Buckley leading the way en route to his first collegiate championship. Buckley finished the tournament at 7 under par after holding off his teammate, sophomore Rory Franssen, who finished at 6 under par.
The Tigers’ top five finishers were rounded out by junior Matt Echelmeier, who finished in a tie for third at 1 under par, and freshmen Jamie Stewart and Jack Parker, who finished tied for fifth at even-par.
Senior Trevor Ullestad competed as an individual and had a solid tournament in his own right. Ullestad finished in seventh place at 4 over par while scoring a final round 68, which was the best single-round performance of his career so far.
The Tigers will return to action on Oct. 1 when they travel to Valentine, Nebraska, for the Jackrabbit Invitational.
