Missouri soccer had its three-game win streak snapped Wednesday after two early goals by Mississippi State proved too much to overcome in a 3-1 loss in Starkville, Mississippi.

Conceding early goals has been a problem for the Tigers all season, and this game was no different.

In the 16th minute, Bulldogs forward Brooke McKee scored a close-range header off of a precise long-distance cross from senior Mallory Eubanks.

Mississippi State reinforced its lead just five minutes later after a critical error by Missouri junior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey gave the Bulldogs a second goal. Dossey failed to secure the ball on a weak header, allowing Bulldogs forward MaKayla Waldner to score on the resulting rebound, putting Mississippi State ahead 2-0.

The Tigers clawed back in the 70th minute behind a goal from freshman Tess Rellihan. Rellihan ran onto a deflection in the box and slotted it through the keeper’s legs for her fifth goal in six games.

The Tigers played well after the goal but were unable to equalize before Mississippi State put the game away in the 83rd minute, when Waldner got her second goal of the night on a deflection.

“Hats off to Mississippi State; they had a really good plan,” Mizzou coach Bryan Blitz said in a press release. “We played really well to try to turn it around on the road, but the lesson here is you’re not going to be able to turn it around all the time.”

Missouri will look to get back on track Sunday at 5 p.m. at home against Texas A&M.
