Despite a fiery second-half comeback, Missouri soccer fell in its third consecutive game Friday night on the road against the Vanderbilt Commodores. After allowing three first-half goals, the Tigers were able to get level in the second half but ultimately fell 5-3. The loss marks the Tigers’ second streak of three or more losses this season and drops Missouri to 1-3 in Southeastern Conference play.

In Friday night’s game, Mizzou played only one goalkeeper for the first time this season; junior Kelsey Dossey was in the net all game.

Mizzou jumped on top early when redshirt sophomore Madison Lewis scored from about 21 yards out on a free kick to put the Tigers up 1-0 in the 11th minute.

Missouri’s only lead of the game would last just 13 minutes; the Commodores responded with three unanswered goals within the span of 15 minutes to go up 3-1. In the 24th minute, Vanderbilt’s Olivia Simmons headed in her second goal of the season. Simmons’ goal was followed by scores from redshirt sophomore Jackie Welch and junior Gabrielle Rademaker.

Mizzou opened the second half with a furious comeback, scoring two goals in three minutes to even the score at 3-3. The Tigers’ comeback attempt began in the 56th minute when senior Jessica Johnson netted her fourth goal of the season to bring the game within 1. In the 59th minute, sophomore forward Sarah Luebbert scored her second goal of the season off a deflection to knot the score. The tie was short-lived, however, as Vanderbilt goals from Simone Charley and Simmons in the 67th and 81st minutes put the game away for good.

Mizzou continues SEC play on Thursday, Oct. 5, against No. 10 Florida.
