Spring break is the perfect time to listen to all the great new music that has come out over the past few months. Use this playlist to get into that relaxed spring break mindset, whether you’re sitting on the beach or chilling on your couch.
“Nameless, Faceless” – Courtney Barnett
Courtney Barnett’s signature storytelling style of songwriting is back with this single. Barnett has announced an album coming out in May, called _Tell Me How You Really Feel_. Her last solo album came out three years ago, and this one is highly anticipated. Barnett paraphrases a Margaret Atwood quote in the chorus, singing, “Men are scared that women will laugh at them … women are scared that men will kill them.” The song brings up ideas about womanhood and the dangers of toxic masculinity. It makes you think, but it’ll also make you want to sing along.
“Lemon Glow” – Beach House
Beach House has a way of making songs sound dark yet dreamy. “Lemon Glow” is a perfect example of this. The band has announced its upcoming album, _7_, and have released two singles so far. This one is compelling and mysterious, much like the rest of the band’s work. Beach House is consistent in a comfortable way. Its style has changed subtly over the years, but the band still maintains its haunting style. Lemon Glow fits right in with the rest of Beach House’s songs and is definitely worth a listen.
“New For You” – Hinds
Hinds, a garage-rock group from Spain, released “New For You” in February. The four women who make up the band produce high-energy songs that almost certainly will put you in a good mood. “New For You” is a song about yearning and desire and change, yet the band somehow makes the song upbeat and slightly poppy. Simply put, the song is fun, just like the rest of the band’s music.
“She Works Out Too Much” – MGMT
This song from MGMT’s new album, _Little Dark Age_, has a combination of MGMT’s psych-rock sound mixed with eighties workout vibes. That sounds like a confusing combination, but it works surprisingly well. The song references the shallow nature of 21st century dating and being stuck in a relationship. It features a woman’s voice throughout, who sounds like she’s guiding you through a workout video. Her cheery voice tells you to “Get ready to have some fun!” “Let’s move onto the next step!” and in the chorus, she sings, “The only reason we never worked out was he didn’t work out enough.” The song finishes with her ending the workout, the song and relationship with a simple “Okay, we’re done.”
“Make Me Feel” – Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe created a perfect Prince tribute with this song. “Make Me Feel” talks about human nature and sexuality and is perfect for dancing. The song is clearly reminiscent of Prince’s work, which gives it a sense of nostalgia as well. Monáe calls herself “powerful with a little bit of tender” and references the fluidity of her romantic attractions. According to Consequence of Sound, Prince himself actually played a role in the writing of this song and the production of the rest of the album.
“Beach Life-In-Death” – Car Seat Headrest
If you’ve been searching for a 13-minute song about being a teenager and struggling to come to terms with your identity, you’ve come to the right place. “Beach Life-In-Death” is long, but it’s like you’re getting three songs for the price of one. This song was originally released in 2011 on Car Seat Headrest’s album _Twin Fantasy_. Frontman Will Toledo recorded the original on his own and released it on Bandcamp seven years ago, but this year the band re-recorded the album and revamped it. This song, if you have the attention span, is worth every minute.
“Ralphie” – Post Animal
Post Animal rose to fame in the summer of 2016, after it was discovered that Stranger Things star Joe Keery was a member of the band. Since, it’s toured and worked with popular rock bands like Twin Peaks and has gained steady momentum. Its sound is reminiscent of Tame Impala’s, and “Ralphie” is a promising look at its upcoming album. Post Animal will be at Cafe Berlin this May, so if this song is up your alley, you’ll get a chance to see it live in just a couple months. And while Keery is off being a famous actor, he says he still has a role in the band, so we can only hope that he’ll be onstage at Cafe Berlin as well.
“Pirouette” – Jay Som
Melina Duterte of Jay Som released a pair of singles in February that included “Pirouette.” The two were demos from her last album _Everybody Works_, which came out in 2017. Duterte wrote and recorded the songs entirely on her own, which makes them all the more impressive. “Pirouette” is intricate, detailed and has Jay Som’s distinct dream pop sound. It fits right in with the rest of the album.
“Apathy” – Frankie Cosmos
DIY rocker Greta Kline released “Apathy,” a single from her upcoming album, just a few weeks ago. Kline has been releasing music under the name Frankie Cosmos since she was a teenager, and her music has only gotten better. “Apathy” is full of intimate details, as well as Kline’s unique thought processes. The lyrics are a bit quirky and unconventional, but that’s what makes it so compelling.
“Listening In” – Dr. Dog
“Listening In” is the first single off of Dr. Dog’s upcoming album, _Critical Equation_. Since “Listening In” came out, the band has released two more singles from the album. This song follows Dr. Dog’s style that mirrors ‘60s and ‘70s rock, and it has a bit of a mysterious sound. It’s a great preview of its next album, and a bit of a contrast from some of the band’s past releases. It’s a little darker but just as intriguing.
