Senior Karissa Schweizer took the baton from redshirt freshman Karina Liz — in fourth place in the distance relay medley, and over four seconds behind the leader.
Schweizer passed the three teams in front of her and helped give Missouri a comeback win in the relay on the final day of competition at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Two days after breaking the 5,000 meter Drake Relays record, Schweizer not only gave Missouri its third win of the weekend but was able to break away from the competition, finishing the women’s DMR with a time of 11:07.59. She finished more than 10 seconds before second-place Indiana State.
Other impressive performances from the weekend included a second-place finish from redshirt junior Gabi Jacobs in the women’s discus on Friday.
Jacobs finished second with a throw of 55.26 meters. Jacobs is hitting her stride at this point in the year. Her top three throws of the season have come in her last three meets. Jacobs also added a 10th-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 14.61 meters.
On the men’s side, redshirt junior Will Fife finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 18.09 meters on Friday.
Junior Landon Cuskelly followed his top-10 program mark with a fifth-place jump of 2.08 meters. Sophomore Allie Webb rounded out the day with a sixth-place finish in the javelin throw, finishing with a mark of 41.63 meters.
The next day, redshirt junior Avery Carter placed fifth in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 62.76 meters.
Juniors Becky Keating and Karissa Roman both had fourth-place finishes on Saturday. Keating had a 59.90 meter mark in the hammer throw while Roman had a leap of 1.74 meters in the high jump.
On the track, the 4X800 relay team of senior Mark Sheridan, redshirt senior Ben Goodman, redshirt freshman Robert Kuhlmann and freshman Chris Conrad finished in third place on Friday behind a 1:49.23 split from Conrad.
Conrad came back the next day and finished 10th in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.22. Redshirt senior Jerrad Mason finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles, rounding out the weekend with a time of 51.69.
Next, both teams will travel to the SEC conference championships in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 11-13.
For runners on the cut line for the NCAA West Regionals, this will be the last shot to get Regional qualifying times. The athletes with the top 48 times or marks in each region will qualify.
