The Missouri softball team is looking for a new head coach, MU Athletic Director Jim Sterk announced Tuesday in a statement.
Interim Head Coach Gina Fogue took over this season on Jan. 29 after Mizzou Athletics announced three days prior that former head coach Ehren Earleywine had been fired. Fogue is not out of the picture to be brought back, but the decision to undertake in a search may indicate that the program wants other options.
Missouri will not hire an outside consultant to advise the department during its search.
Fogue, who played for Mizzou, graduated from the university in 2010 and then became Missouri softball’s director of operations from 2011 to 2012. She then took on an assistant coaching position before becoming the interim head coach this season.
The Tigers finished this season with a 30-29 record, eerily shadowing the 29-28 2017 team coached by Earleywine. The team’s season ended after going 2-2 in the NCAA Norman Regional, ultimately ending with a 7-0 loss to Oklahoma on Sunday.
“I’m so proud of our group for showing so much fight these last three games and coming away with two victories,” Fogue said in a press release from the team on Sunday.
Two job openings — softball head coach and assistant coach — went on MU’s Human Resource Services website on Monday. The head coach job requirements include a minimum of six years of applicable experience.
“In order to protect the integrity of the search, I will have no further public comments regarding the process or the status of any candidates until the announcement of Mizzou’s next head softball coach is made,” Sterk said in his statement.
