As delicious as Plaza 900 and Rollins can be, sometimes students want a change of taste in their food. Thankfully, Columbia has some of the best restaurants to offer, ranging from American to Italian and beyond. This list compiles a brief rundown of some of the most popular off-campus eats based off of student opinions, atmosphere, taste and budget.
####1. Shakespeare’s Pizza####
A full list of Columbia restaurants that students love would not be complete without Shakespeare’s Pizza. For both lunch and dinner, students and Columbia locals alike swarm to this local restaurant. Freshman Landon Brickey said Shakespears hosts the perfect environment.
“It’s the perfect place for any time of day,” he said. “You could go with one friend at lunch and grab a slice of pizza or go with a huge group at dinner and share. Shakespeare’s has a fun atmosphere that is great just to hang out in as well.”
####2. Glenn’s Cafe####
Glenn’s Cafe brings the comfort of a hot southern meal to the Midwest. Favorite dishes vary from chicken and waffles all the way to a New Orleans taste of pastalaya. This is especially a great restaurant for students to head to during the stress of finals week thanks to homemade favorites like their famous mac ’n cheese or the bold Bloody Mary Meal. Glenn’s is a great place to visit during nice weather because of the outdoor eating patio.
####3. The Heidelberg####
Located conveniently across from MU’s J-School, The Heidelberg has been running for over 50 years. It can easily be spotted by the famous colorfully painted piano that sits outside the door waiting to be played by those passing by. This restaurant has a vast menu with dozens of entrees to choose from, a favorite being the Sunday brunch menu, and is open until midnight for those who need a late night food fix.
####4. Noodles & Company####
Although Noodles & Company isn’t local to just Columbia, its popularity remains. This restaurant has two locations around the city so students can always grab a bowl of their favorite noodles. Freshman Chase Harrison said Noodles & Company to be his go-to place for a quick and delicious bite to eat.
“Noodles are my favorite food, so I absolutely love going here,” Harrison said. “The menu has such a wide variety, so I can always try a different flavor when I visit.”
####5. Main Squeeze####
Main Squeeze can be found on 28 S. 9th St. This restaurant is unique in their sole focus is preparing their meals with mostly local and organic materials. It’s great for not only lunch but breakfast as well. If breakfast is your thing, you’re in luck because they even serve it all hours of the day. Main Squeeze has great smoothie options for a quick drink in between classes with clever names such as the Zomberry and the Fruit Suit.
Grab a friend or two now and go try a new Columbia classic!
