On a windy final day at the Club at Old Hawthorne, Missouri women’s golf showed it has its home course down to a science. Competing in their annual tournament, the Johnie Imes, the Tigers trounced the field, winning the tournament by 22 strokes.
The Tigers finished with a team 853, 11-under-par. Individually, four Missouri golfers finished in the top 10. Senior Emma Allen was Missouri’s top finisher, winning medalist honors with a 211, 5-under-par over the three rounds.
“It was a great [team] win for us today in some downright tough, windy conditions,” coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said in a press release.
Priesmeyer continued to talk about the significance of Allen’s win: “[Her] win was special because it was our home event and senior day and it was her first win.”
Finishing its first two tournaments 10th and 13th, both out of 15 teams, at the Minnesota Invitational and Mason Rudolph Championship, respectively, Missouri needed a bounce back performance.
After the first round on Monday, Missouri held a four shot lead over second place Florida Gulf Coast. The team did not give up their lead for the rest of the tournament.
During the final round, the Tigers continued to impress, finishing with a round low team score of 289.
“We played with great patience and confidence through the day and did a nice job of avoiding big numbers,” Priesmeyer said. “[It] has been something we were determined to do better this week.”
The team will travel to San Marcos, Texas, at the end of October to compete in the Jim West Challenge, hosted by Texas State – San Marcos.
##Men’s Golf places fifth in Nebraska
While the women played their rounds at Old Hawthorne, approximately 630 miles northwest Missouri men’s golf competed in the Jackrabbit in Valentine, Nebraska, hosted by South Dakota State, where the team finished fifth overall. It has yet to place outside the top five in three tournaments this season.
The Tigers shot a team 878, 14-over-par in three rounds. Sophomore Jamie Stewart was the team’s highest finisher, ending the tournament tied for 12th with a 217, 1-over-par.
The team will travel to Jonesborough, Tennessee, next weekend for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by East Tennessee State Oct. 12-14.
