Missouri defensive end Tre Williams was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of second-degree domestic assault, multiple sources confirmed. He has been suspended indefinitely from the MU football team.
Williams, 21, got into a verbal argument while in a car on the 3900 block of South Providence early Sunday morning, Columbia Police Department spokesman Jeff Pitts told The Maneater. Williams became physically aggressive while the victim was driving. Officers responded to an initial report of a physical altercation around 1:45 a.m. and observed physical evidence that supported the victim’s claim.
Williams was booked with probable cause at 7:08 a.m. at the Boone County Sheriff Department jail, Pitts said. Williams posted bond of $4,500 and was released around 8:30 a.m.
“We were made aware of the situation yesterday, and Tre was immediately suspended indefinitely from all team activities,” coach Barry Odom said in a release. “We will provide an update if his status changes.”
Second-degree domestic assault is considered a Class D felony. Any MU athlete arrested on suspicion of a felony will be suspended indefinitely from his or her team, according to the MU student-athlete handbook. If an athlete is found guilty of a felony or pleads guilty to one, he or she will be permanently banned from his or her respective team.
Williams, a redshirt sophomore who went to Rock Bridge High in Columbia, was a regular starter on Missouri’s defensive line this year and finished the regular season with 20 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Tigers (8-4) end the season in The Liberty Bowl against Oklahoma State in Memphis on Dec. 31.
